Rules of Poker

There are many types of poker. The best known and most popular type is Texas Hold ‘Em. Other types are Omaha, Omaha Hi Lo, 7 Card Stud, Five Card Draw, Razz and Horse.

Rules of Texas Holdem Poker

The goal of the game is to make a better card combination of five cards than your opponents. At the beginning of each round, each player is dealt two cards (hole cards). These cards are private and for your eyes only. After each player has received two cards, the first betting round begins.

Pre-flop

Players must bet on how useful they think their own first two cards are. When betting, players can decide to raise (put more into the pot and challenge opponents to do the same), players can decide to call (put the required chips in the pot), or they can decide to fold if their cards simply aren’t good enough.

The Flop

When everyone is ready to bet, there will be three cards (the flop) dealt from the stack in the middle of the table (community cards). These cards are for everyone and should be used to make a combination of five cards. There will now be a second round of placing bets.

The Turn

When everyone is done placing bets, a fourth card (the turn) will be shown in the middle of the table. This card is once again for all players to be used to make a combination of five cards. After the turn, the playes once again must choose to either check, fold, call or raise until all bets are placed.

The River

The last community card, the fifth (the river) will be shows afterwards. This last card is shown to all players and consequently all players who are still in the game can bet for the last time.

Best hand wins

When everyone is done placing bets for the last time, all players must show their hole cards. The person with the best hand wins. The best hand is a combination of the two hole cards and the cards on the table. A player always makes use of five of the seven cards (two cards and five community cards).

Winner takes the pot

The winner of the hand takes the pot, which is the entire amount of poker chips that players have been putting into the pot during the hand.
